Customer Reviews

Background you can skip
We bought our existing household about two years ago and slowly started replacing the somewhat dated or low-superior appliances that had been left behind for us. Most of it was Frigidaire or Kenmore. Nothing at all incorrect with that, but we wanted to get a greater fridge, microwave hood, dishwasher and cooktop. This evaluation, naturally, is about the cooktop only. The other items ware reviewed elsehwere on Amazon.
What had been we searching for?
1 - Well, very first of all, we wanted HEAT: we are quite much into Asian food and cook largely in our Wok(s) (see other reviews as well!). This requires high BTU output.
TWO - We wanted an aesthetic stainless steel appear, a tiny significantly more like the qualified Bertazzoni or Viking type cooktops.
3 - Excellent. We wanted heavy cast iron grates that would withstand heavy daily use.
4 - Space. We needed adequate space about the wok to be in a position to cook appropriately on the high heat burner if employing a bigger wok (16" or so).
Five - Ergonomics. The manage knobs necessary to be in the front due awkward positioning in the kitchen, leaving little space on the suitable hand side towards the back to reach or see the knobs appropriately.
SIX - Finally, we necessary ALL OF THE ABOVE to be squeezed into a 30" cooktop.
About this item - KFGS306VSS
Just after significantly research we decided that the KitchenAid Architect II series was the one to get. It featured 5 burners of whuch the middle burner is a 15,000 BTU burner (18,000 BTU on 36" version) whereas most cooktops in this pricerange top rated out at four burners and 12,500 BTU max.
It has the control knobs on the front and is a especially industrial searching style.
The grates are heavy cast orin and you get three of them. All in all, this one particular delivered on all fronts in the specifications that we set out.
Upon receipt of the item, we identified that the 1st rule of construction (closely related to Murphy's Law)applied to us as well: if one thing can go incorrect or get complicated it will.
And it did. The CUT-OUT dimensions of this cooktop did not fit the existing (and what we believed to be standard dimensions) in our countertop. This KitchenAid needs the following:
Depth, Opening: 20 in.
Width, Opening: 29 in.
Our existing cutout was 28.five" by 19.5". Ofcourse this represented a horrendous situation in installation as we had to get the coutertop opening cut out further.
Anyways: some masking tape, a pneumatic sabre saw (14.99$) and some saws and that was solved as nicely.
Pros:
- Lots of heat from 15,000 BTU burner
- Nicely positioned (center) dual tier wok burner
- Full stainless look, i.e. every thing except grates is stainless
- five burners, instead of the popular 4 on a 30" form factor
- 3 cast iron grates that enable for sliding pots across the surface
Cons:
- Knobs are plasticized, i.e. they can melt if you put a hot pan on them
- No wok ring with the set, not cool as it would have been wonderful with center burner and less expensive brands do consist of those
- Slightly odd form factor for cutout. Not a genuine trouble but just a 'BE AWARE' when you have an existing kitchen cutout.
Conclusion
We are really pleased with this cooktop offered all the characteristics. What we did not like had been the plastic knobs: they appear awesome but I really feel they could have included some thing improved. I assume it is a heat resistant laminate/composite so I am not certain about the melting but I believe it ought to have been solid metal. We decreased 1 star for that. The wok ring would have created this back to 5 stars, but we cannot fault KitchenAid for that as only the mor highly-priced cooktops appears to get those included. A definite obtain if have the exact same specifications as we put in the opening paragraph.

From my point of view this was the very best looking 30" gas cooktop attainable when we remodeled (Aug-Nov 2008). Just after working with it for over a year we are still happy with the aesthetics, and typically pleased cooking on it, but...
1. It does not simmer out of the box - as a prior reviewer stated, its low is not low enough. This is surprising for a somewhat pricey cooktop from a trustworthy company, but there is a fix: The manual (available from the kitchenaid website) explains how to cut down the low setting. You take every knob off while the burner is on and turn a screw. You need to have a thin lengthy screwdriver - I had to make one from a heavy wire hanger, filing the finish to form the screwdriver blade, much easier than it sounds. The low setting is now acceptable, but not pretty as low as I'd like, though I have not tried to readjust it.
2. Common 20" double burner griddles do not fit very easily. We have to set ours diagonally. I've just found Lodges new 16" extended griddles which ought to fit nicelyLodge Double Play Reversible Grill Griddle. I've ordered 1, so we'll see.
three. Markings are readily scratched. The markings on the stainless steel subsequent to the knobs are slowly being scratched off, possibly by aggressive cleaning.
four. The burner tops are very easily bumped from the right alignment when cleaning. This affects the flame shape, and might be unsafe.
I'd decide to buy this once more if offered the cooktop options we had back in 2008.
